A Healthy Mind in A Healthy Body - The Importance of Social Emotional Learning

As English teachers, not only are we responsible for teaching the nuances and vagaries of the English language, but also to ensure our students are equipped with the skills, values and abilities that will ensure they are ready for the world outside the classroom door. Not least amongst these are those connected to our students’ social and emotional wellbeing. In this talk I’ll start by clarifying what exactly SEL is and why it’s so important for us, like all subject teachers, to integrate it into our lessons. Using examples from National Geographic Learning's New Close-up series, I’ll then show how we can weave it into our language classes, alongside the content of our coursebooks, providing plenty of practical takeaway ideas.

The Magic of Words – enhancing effective and efficient vocabulary teaching and learning
There are a great many number of principles to consider when maximising vocabulary learning: the need to give it deliberate attention; the need to show how words do not exist in isolation, but in partnerships and the need for learners to work out meaning for themselves and to take ownership of newly learnt vocabulary. In this hands-on session I’ll explore how National Geographic Learning's New Close-up exploits these different principles to help speed up vocabulary learning and develop greater language awareness.

The value of digital teaching and learning materials have skyrocketed in the last few years and are now a must for the language classroom. In this session, I'll introduce NGL's Spark platform, and showcase how it can help teachers in their everyday planning, teaching and assessment of their classes.
